Honed and filled Travertine what are the different grades ?

We though we should publish this page to show the difference between commercial or "rustic " Travertine and our first quality material.

Commercial quality Travertine. Note the colour variation and larger percentage of holes

Here we have two comparative images . The one above is rustic or commercial grade ; below we have our first quality honed and filled Travertine. The issues on grading here are the fullness of the stone ; commercial stone has more holes. Uniformity of colour ; as you can see the commercial stone has a wider range of colour and is more course in appearance .

Commercial quality stone is often filled by hand and not by machine as our first quality material is . You can see in the image below showing our first grade Travertine the small amount of filler on the edge of the tiles left by the mechanical filling process . Also there are fewer holes to the rear of the tile and finally the colour is much more even .

First quality honed and filled travertine. Note fewer holes, homogenous colour and the evidence of machine filling on the rear of this tile

Commercial quality Travertine may have filled corners.

The above image shows a filled corner of a tile. This is acceptable for commercial quality stone .

This is however not acceptable on our first quality Travertine. This would be graded out of any order we have with our supplier.

Commercial or rustic travertine may have filled through the full body of the tile.

Above we have a shot of commercial quality stone . Firstly you can see that the stone has a lower ratio of fullness i.e. more holes. Secondly you can see some filler that has gone all the way through the tile; this is not acceptable on first quality honed and filled Travertine.

Below another shot of the rear of our first quality Travertine. You can see fewer holes, no filled going through the body of the tile and a more even colour

First quality travertine has much fewer holes . It is not acceptable for there to be holes through the full body of the tile. Also notice the evidence of machine filling on the edge of the tile.
